Statement as of 3:00 am EDT on May 26, 2013 ... Public information statement... Noaa's National Weather Service has designated Sunday, may 26 through Saturday, June 1, 2013, as National hurricane preparedness week. National hurricane preparedness week highlights the importance of planning ahead to protect families and to secure our homes and properties in advance of the upcoming hurricane season. Hurricanes are powerful storms that can create severe flooding, dangerous storm surge, high winds, and tornadoes. The effects of these storms can be devastating to entire communities and have long lasting impacts. In addition to the threat posed to coastal areas, hurricanes also impact inland locations. Each day during National hurricane preapredness week will focus on a specific theme to inform you about hurricane hazards or provide information which can be used to take action. This information can be used to save lives and property. The themes for each day for the week are: Monday... storm surge Tuesday... winds Wednesday... inland flooding Thursday... forecast process Friday... get a plan Saturday... take action Links to the audio and video public service announcements, as well as additional information on National hurricane preparedness week, can be found at www.Hurricanes.Gov/prepare. |
