Weather Summary

Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday, March 16, 2010.

The US saw mild weather on Tuesday as high pressure covered the country. A trough of low pressure swept through the Southern Plains, and kicked up some wet weather. This system moved from Texas and into the Gulf of Mexico, where it picked up moisture and pushed scattered showers onshore. Scattered thunderstorms were anticipated, but have not yet been reported. Rainfall amounts remained light with 0.14 inches reported in Houston, Texas. Cool air was associated with this system and allowed for highs to only reach into the mid-50s.

Meanwhile in the West, a storm in the Pacific Ocean pushed another cold front over the Pacific Northwest. This system picked up ample moisture before spreading overcast skies and scattered showers over Washington and Oregon. Rainfall totals remain less than a quarter of an inch in most areas, as this system continued to develop. California saw another sunny and warm day with highs in the 70s.

The rest of the US saw relatively mild weather on Tuesday. The Southeast saw increasingly cloudy skies as the trough of low pressure moved in from Texas, while the Mid-Atlantic and New England states saw sunny skies with highs in the mid-60s. The Great Lakes region also remained sunny with highs in the 50s, but the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest saw overcast skies as a mild front moved through the region. Flood watches remained in effect as snow and ice continued to melt off of lakes and rivers.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Tuesday have ranged from a morning low of 7 degrees at Leadville, Colo. to a midday high of 82 degrees at Santa Monica, Calif.
