Winter Weather Statement

Severe Weather Bulletin issued by Environment Canada at 3:31 am CST Sunday 22 November 2009. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Warnings in effect for the Kivalliq area of Nunavut... Winter Storm Warning for: =new= Arviat =new= Rankin Region including Whale Cove =new= Chesterfield inlet. Strong wind, snow and blowing snow today and tonight. This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Warnings ended for the Kivalliq area... Blizzard Warning changed to Winter Storm Warning for: Arviat Rankin Region including Whale Cove. Blizzard Warning ended for: Repulse Bay. Blizzard conditions are no longer expected. Winter Storm Watch upgraded to Winter Storm Warning for: Chesterfield inlet. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ==Discussion== the winds over Repulse Bay have weakened and the blizzard has ended. A low pressure system now tracking through northern Manitoba will give near blizzard conditions to the Kivalliq coast today and tonight. Heavy snow and easterly winds with gusts up to 90 km/h will persist in Arviat and Whale Cove today and through most of the upcoming night. These strong winds and snowfall will combine to give visibilities near zero at times in blowing snow. These regions will also see total snowfall accumulations 10 to 20 cm with this storm. Further north, Rankin and Chesterfield inlets will also see snow, but likely a total of 5 to 10 cm. However , strong northeast winds with gusts to 90 km/h will still produce poor visibilities in blowing snow at times today and tonight. Please refer to the latest public forecasts for further details. End
